Why Gen Z Faces the Highest Rate of Anxiety and Depression Among All Adults

Sven Kramer

Gen Z has grown up in a world unlike any previous generation. They entered adulthood during a period shaped by social media, economic uncertainty, global crises, and nonstop digital connection. While technology has opened new opportunities, it has also created new pressures.

Recent studies show that Gen Z faces the highest rates of anxiety and depression among all adult generations. Research from different parts of the world points to the same trend. Young adults are reporting more mental health challenges than older age groups, raising concerns among researchers, employers, educators, and healthcare professionals.

A study conducted by Princeton University and Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting found that 16% of Gen Z respondents reported mental and emotional disturbances. Similar findings appeared in Hong Kong, where Gen Z showed the highest rates of anxiety symptoms at 30% and depression symptoms at 22.3%.

The Digital World Is Taking a Mental Toll

Ivan / Pexels / Gen Z is the first generation to spend most of its life connected to the internet. Smartphones, social media platforms, and instant communication have become part of everyday life.

While these tools make it easier to stay informed and connected, they also create constant mental stimulation. Many young adults feel pressure to remain available at all times. Notifications arrive around the clock. Social feeds never stop updating. The result is a digital environment that rarely allows the mind to rest.

Social media can also create unrealistic expectations. Carefully edited photos and highlight reels often present an idealized version of life. Constant exposure to these images can lead people to compare themselves with others in unhealthy ways.

Those comparisons can damage self-esteem and increase feelings of inadequacy. Even when users understand that social media is not reality, repeated exposure can still affect confidence and emotional well-being.

Another challenge comes from endless access to news. Global events appear on screens within seconds, often accompanied by alarming headlines and emotional reactions. Many Gen Z adults report feeling overwhelmed by what they see online.

A UNICEF report found that 6 in 10 Gen Z young people feel overwhelmed by news and world events. Continuous exposure to negative stories can increase stress and create a sense of helplessness. Many people describe this habit as doomscrolling.

Financial Pressure Is Fueling Anxiety

Karola / Pexels / Financial stress has emerged as a major factor affecting Gen Z adults. Many young people are entering adulthood during a period marked by rising living costs and economic uncertainty.

Housing prices remain high in many regions. Rent consumes a large portion of monthly income. Everyday expenses continue to rise, making it harder for young adults to feel financially secure.

The Deloitte Global 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey found that 48% of Gen Z respondents identified their long-term financial future as a significant source of stress. This concern extends beyond current bills and expenses.

Many young adults worry about building savings, purchasing a home, and achieving financial stability. These concerns can linger in the background and contribute to chronic anxiety over time.

Financial stress can affect nearly every area of life. It can disrupt sleep, strain relationships, and reduce overall well-being. When these worries persist, mental health often suffers.

The workplace is another major source of pressure for Gen Z adults. Many are trying to establish careers while adapting to rapidly changing work environments. Expectations often feel high, especially for those entering competitive industries.

According to Deloitte's findings, 40% of Gen Z respondents say they feel stressed or anxious all or most of the time. Workplace issues are often a significant contributor to these feelings.
