Every parent hopes they never face a medical emergency with their child. For one Houston mother, that frightening moment came just hours after bringing her newborn home. Her baby did not seem right, and although others brushed off her concerns, she refused to stay quiet.

The diagnosis surprised everyone. During pregnancy, Muhs had tested negative for Group B Strep during routine screening. That result usually lowers the risk, but it does not completely rule out the possibility of infection after birth.

Group B Strep can be extremely dangerous for newborn babies. The bacteria can lead to serious infections that spread quickly if treatment is delayed. Early symptoms are often subtle, making them easy to overlook. In this case, the infection had already become serious enough that the baby needed intensive care. He remained in critical care for 16 days while doctors treated the infection and closely monitored his recovery.

Those weeks were filled with uncertainty. Every test brought new questions. Every passing day reminded the family how quickly a newborn’s health can change. The treatment worked. The little boy gradually regained his strength and recovered. Today, he is healthy, active, and thriving, a result that once seemed far from certain.
