He described it as being “full circle,” after learning that seniors were carrying children’s backpacks during their final school year.

Commenters quickly pointed out that the tradition was not new. Some said they had seen it for years, while one TikTok user claimed a group of friends had carried kiddie backpacks during senior year as far back as 2008.

Social media has helped keep the trend visible. Creator @karlieissoswag has shared compilations featuring high school students with “Pokémon,” “Bluey,” “Paw Patrol,” and “Peppa Pig” backpacks. One compilation even uses the “Backpack Song” from “Dora the Explorer,” giving the trend an extra layer of childhood nostalgia.

According to Dr. Hafeez, carrying an item associated with childhood may symbolize a longing for a period that felt simpler and less demanding. Seniors are approaching major changes, including college, jobs, greater independence, and new responsibilities. A childhood-themed backpack can offer a small reminder of a familiar time.

The trend can also challenge expectations about growing up. Teenagers often face pressure to act older and prepare quickly for adulthood. Choosing a Care Bears, Muppets, or cartoon-themed backpack can become a playful way to push back against that pressure.

Humor plays a role, too. Dr. Hafeez notes that teenagers may use irony to make light of worries about growing up. Wearing an item associated with early childhood can turn those concerns into something amusing and social.
